Explain to employees which applications will be approved and permissible on employee devices. Don’t be surprised if there is some disgruntlement from some employees when the new MDM strategy is implemented. Make sure to educate, train and, if possible, offer some benefit with the new approach. BDTI develops consumer-focused user experience rating for mobile devices
(Source: RENEW ORB/CNN) LONDON (RENEW ORB/CNN) – Some recycling bins in a section of London have been working overtime, and not with just helping the city’s financial district “go green.” These bins have a little secret. Trash bins have been busy tracking and collecting data off people’s smartphones. A small number of the 200 new recycling bins dotted around London’s financial district were doing more than taking trash, more than showing video ads. If you were in London doing some sightseeing or to work, and you walked by one of the bins, chances are it was collecting data off your mobile device. When people got wind that a company called Orb was collecting the unique signal coming from some smartphones and other mobile devices, the company insisted it was a limited trial and that it has now stopped. When the trial was launched in June, Renew Orb boasted it was collecting enough information to identify the manufacturer of each device. It thought potential advertisers would want to know the market share of devices people used in the financial center, and few people had heard about what they were doing. “It’s an invasion of privacy that most of the public are absolutely, totally unaware of,” one London woman said. Renew Orb said it would not contravene any data protection principles, and would only introduce the technology that could connect advertisers to each mobile device after public consultation. Renew Orb admits that current UK privacy laws may actually forbid it from rolling out this technology, which mean these bins could be worth nothing more than what’s put in them. After Lenovo, the next biggest PC vendor is Hewlett-Packard, a company that keeps talking about getting back into the smartphone game and increasing its push into tablets. But short of the dirt-cheap Slate 7 and a single high-end Windows tablet, HP remains solidly a notebook and desktop company. As you look further down the PC top five, Dell hasnt done much to excite buyers with its attempts at tablets and smartphones. The Taiwan-based titans Acer and Asus both produce smartphones, but are better known for their Android tablets. Both companies are top five tablet vendors worldwide and shipped a combined 3.5 million tablets last quarter, according to IDC. The rise of anytime-anywhere computing Where things start to get really interesting, however, is when you look at the top 5 smartphone vendors in the world. This consumer-focused rating will provide consumers with a tool that measures the things that directly impact user experience–battery life, application speed and network performance–for a wide variety of mobile products. This initiative stems from the overwhelming demand for a meaningful, transparent mobile benchmark focused on actual user experience. The rating was initiated in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies Inc. (QTI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., the industry leader in chipsets for mobile devices and is being endorsed by Tencent, one of China’s largest Internet media platform providers. “Many existing mobile benchmarks do not measure attributes relevant to consumers and can be easily manipulated,” explained Jeff Bier, president of BDTI. “There is a striking lack of mobile benchmarks that measure actual user experience. Our user-experience-focused tests will include real-world measurements of application performance, battery life, and data transfer speed and delay.” Raj Talluri, senior VP of Product Management at QTI, said: “QTI believes in the need for a realistic, unbiased, and transparent benchmarking process that is designed to provide a reliable and accurate assessment of a mobile device’s real-world capabilities.
