TRADE NEWS: Agilent Technologies Opens Spectroscopy Technology Innovation Center

For example, your phone knows that you’ve just passed security in the airport, and for which flight you just scanned a boarding pass, so the airline’s website shows you a personalized map to your gate. Growing personalization is one of the trends represented by this year’s 36 Technology Pioneer companies , and the much larger pool of nominees from which they were selected by a committee comprising top technology and innovation experts, academics and venture capitalists. Other trends include tools to make collaboration easier; a revolution in education; breakthroughs in robotics and smarter products and services — such as tiny, edible tags that act like barcodes woven into the fabric of products. This year’s Technology Pioneers include no-brainer solutions that are both greener and cheaper — such as a more efficient way for air conditioning systems to dehumidify air. They include companies focused on bringing products and services to developing and emerging markets, from affordable prosthetic knees to solar-powered electricity and financial services using credit ratings based on social media connections. In the health sector, a range of Technology Pioneers are promising breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Imagine being able to screen for cancer with a routine blood test, and receive a report on the precise genetic profile of your cancer which points you towards targeted therapies. Imagine cancer treatment that is more effective and with fewer side-effects – because it involves directly rewiring the cancer cells’ DNA, or starving them of an enzyme they need to survive, or using nanoparticles to deliver drugs directly to the tumour. With many of these technologies, we are not there yet. But the Technology Pioneers report has historically been a fertile hunting ground for solutions that can also have an impact in other fields.

Technology ushers locally produced milk, food from the farm to the table By Steven Overly , E-mail the writer The milkman brings two-and-a-half gallons of South Mountain Creamerys freshest to Cynthia Terrells Takoma Park home each Tuesday, carefully placing the glass bottles on her front porch before dawn and collecting the empty containers from last weeks delivery. The scene is like a still life from some 1950s Pleasantville. But the Terrell familys locally sourced lifestyle is made possible by something far more modern. Skype: Camera technology is holding back 3D video chats

The amount of intensity goes up.” McCoy says they get even more specific than that. If a player can accelerate 60 percent faster to his left than his right after a recent right knee injury, the data indicates that he’s probably not ready for the field on Sunday. Beyond injuries, the evidence-based data breeds changes in practice, such as redefining what Thursday practice looks like, if practices were too strenuous and made replicating it in games too difficult or how to keep players from standing too long. Myslinski has even proven to his players what a good night’s sleep (or a good massage) can actually do to boost speed. And as practices change, gameplans do too. “Through tracking movement, we can see and create a visual reference for a coach to be able to see if what they drew up was executed by all athletes and if it was executed to the athlete’s maximum physical capability,” says Regan. “The American attitude is ‘What does it mean for Sunday?'” As coaches can use player-specific data to craft plays and gameplans, they can also use historical data of an individual player to give them an understanding of what to expect from a player as a game wears on. Even though using high-tech tracking during games isn’t currently allowed — that may change, though — rest assured that discussion about measuring each athlete’s “PlayerLoad” exertion through practice has risen to the forefront of training, pushing NFL teams into a new technological era. “If we are having this conversation in a couple of years, people are missing the boat,” Myslinski says. “It has made me a better coach.

K-12 Technology: Benefits and Drawbacks

Before Obama [2 volumes]: A Reappraisal of Black Reconstruction Era Politicians

Many factors play into this but none as strongly as technological advancements. The Internet, wireless devices and improvements in communication all heighten the immediacy for information both within and without the classroom. This is both a blessing and a curse, of course. It is really too soon to tell if the first Internet-raised generations will fare better or worse in life and succeed on a global scale. The assumption is that technology equals improvement and I would argue that overall, it is a true statement. More access to information and a shrinking world can only lead to beneficial results for K-12 students. The children graduating from high school in the next decade will have a broader view of the world than ever before and that is thanks to traditional geographic boundaries becoming non-issues in communication, workforce and learning. I take no issue with the actual technology. It is great.

And while Goodyear often applies what it learns in the high-performance world of NASCAR to the development of consumer tires, this time technology was transferred from the street to the track. “Atlanta is one of our biggest challenges from a tire perspective,” said Stu Grant, Goodyear’s general manager of worldwide racing. “The abrasive track surface causes extremely high wear, while the length and layout promote very high speeds.” To face this challenge, Goodyear engineers set out to develop a tire capable of offering both superior traction and weartwo typically opposing properties. The solution was found in Goodyear’s Assurance TripleTred All-Season passenger tire. The Assurance TripleTred pioneered the concept of multiple tread zones in auto tires, featuring three distinct zones for superior traction in wet, icy and dry conditions. “Developing the right tire for each NASCAR track always requires finding a good balance between traction and durability,” said Grant. “The goal of our new Multi-Zone Tread is to help us offer drivers more of both.” To accomplish this, Goodyear’s newest NASCAR tire utilizes two unique tread zones. An Endurance Zone on the tire’s inside shoulder features a firmer compound to help manage wear for enhanced durability on the track. The outside two-thirds of the tread makes up the tire’s Traction Zone, which uses a more tractive tread compound to help increase grip for superior handling. Goodyear has tested the Multi-Zone Tread tire several times over the past year.

Goodyear Debuts New NASCAR Tire Technology in Atlanta

Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Skype, Mark Gillett, told the BBC that the company has worked on 3D video calling in its labs. We have it in the lab, we know how to make it work and we’re looking at the ecosystem of devices and their capability to support it in order to make a decision when we might think about bringing something like that to market, Gillett said, in a BBC interview commemorating Skype’s 10th anniversary. As interesting as 3D video chat sounds, the odds of it getting out of the lab are slim, given that consumers don’t seem to care much about 3D. On televisions, 3D has been a flop, particularly in the United States , and the need for 3D glasses is a non-starter for video chat. While some phone and tablet makers have attempted glasses-free 3D over the years, these devices haven’t gained any traction. (Nintendo, in fact, just announced the 2DS , a 2D version of its handheld game console, after admitting that 3D isn’t as exciting as the company expected.) Even if 3D screens were more popular, Gillett pointed out that the lack of 3D cameras in phones, tablets, and laptops is a major roadblock. As we work with that kind of technology you have to add multiple cameras to your computer, precisely calibrate them and point them at the right angle, Gillett said. And for what purpose? It’s not clear why people would want to have 3D video chats to begin with. While chatting with a 3D image may seem slightly more realistic, chances are it would be more of a novelty than an essential technology–much like 3D itself. Let me know when Skype perfects holographic video chat instead.
